What a great book! Truly. I haven't read a work of fiction as engaging as this in quite some time. Rich, carefully developed characters in a 1960s Paris full of color and conflict. The protagonist, Michel, a school boy with a penchant for table soccer and no aptitude for maths, finds a little room in the back of a restaurant where he meets a group of mostly Russians and eastern Europeans who share their stories of flight from the other side of Stalin's Iron Curtain. The first thing I did after finishing the book was to read the first chapter all over again. Undoubtedly, it made sense the second time!A big, fulfilling novel with many different stories, perfectly combined together.Interesting plot, great structure.The reader becomes an invisible member of the club, one of the patrons of Balto, a distant observer of the lives of Michel and the others.

Wonderful stuff! Entertaining and absorbing, while avoiding both the high- and low- brows. However, I did find the mystery at the end a little unnecessary and somewhat messily-done. I think the book would have worked just as well, if not better, as what it appeared to be up until pretty much the last 50 pages: a rambling collection of stories about people's lives, barely connected one to another.

Brilliant- the length of the book is completely justified, it's so involving and enjoyable that you are very unlikely to wish it was shorter. The characters and interactions are clear and real, and the story's themes of loss, companionship and regret run through the whole book beautifully.

The book is about the life of Michel Martini when he was a teenager and how the meeting with "le club des incorrigibles optimistes" changed the way he was looking at life or maybe even his whole life. The life of boy growing up in an average french family after WWII. I had heard really a lot of things about this book and I was convinced I should give it a look. In the beginning I was confused. The story was proceeding so slowly and I could not understand what the write wants to say. I was

They interact with each other and crossing paths with real chracters such as Stalin, Lenin and Camus. It talks about Politics, philosophy, the Algerian war but also it's a story of family, relation ships, comunication, love, war, humour, crime, and a lot more.Keep reading. it worth it.EXCELENT
