it has the characteristic sadness and nostalgia of the Mexican literature.

This is a tiny novel written by the Mexican author José Emilio Pacheco.The reason I read it is because I recently moved to Mexico to work temporarily and wished to learn more about its culture. One of my closest Mexican friends recommended it to me.The plot is about an impossible love. But what I really appreciated about the novel is how it translates the protagonists genuine thoughts and pureness (typical of his age, as he is just a kid) before love and other aspects of life in Latin America:

3.5 The ending was kind of confusing

A short book that captures you in a period in time, where Mexico was more at peace, the problems were not easier, but success was more at grasp. The descriptions made me enter this bubble that now a days you can only feel in American movies where they always put a yellow filter on the camera lens when talking about "Mexico". I loved it!

It is a good short story, very easy to read you could get involved and excited with all the pages that you will read.

For years my buddy Pablo has been telling me that I need to read this book. Indeed, for anyone under 40 who lives in the hip Roma-Condesa part of Mexico City (and especially for foreigners), Pacheco's slim novella should be mandatory reading. Sadly, it was José Emilio Pacheco's death a couple weeks ago that finally convinced me to give it a read.
