I've read 'Desert Flower' by Waris Dirie years ago, and have been trying to read more non fiction, so grabbed this when I saw it at work. It was interesting finding out about what Waris has been up to since her first book (although apparently she's written a couple of others in the meantime that have flown completely under my radar), and I had no idea that a film had been made of 'Desert Flower'. I'm not sure I can say I enjoyed this book, but it was interesting, and kept me reading.

Wow, wat een boek. realiteit werd werkelijkheid. je gaat nadenken over dingen waar je normaal nooit over nadenkt. behoorlijk onder de indruk!

It's terrifying how something as horrific as FGM is still going on today. I really love how passionate Waris is about the cause and I was inspired by the story. The writing of the story wasn't top notch- good, but not great- however, the story itself makes up for that.

This book is a very interesting and easy read, though at times the wording is slightly awkward - probably a translation issue. It told me a lot that I didn't already know about the prevailing culture in the areas where FGM is rife - I had not realised that this was a problem amongst the Kurds nor had I realised that it affected Christian groups in Africa as well as Muslim groups, though I probably should have done, as I knew that it is culturally based rather than religion based.
