Read in French, reviewed in English.I'm actually very curious about how this book sounds in translation. How would someone translate or find an equivalent for verlan? Or Marseillais-isms like tchatcher? What about store names like Prisunique, Carrefour, and Monoprix? I really enjoyed all those very French things because it's as close to modern and super-casual French as I get in books these days. (Victor Hugo: Dramatic and accessible? Yes. Casual? Not so much.) Izzo fills his polar with argotLike Chandler in my French ears. i love it...Marseille gangsters...are there any French movies made of this guys writing?
I read this after it was recommended by the Point Blank podcast. It's the story of a jaded detective who becomes personally involved in the killing of a friend and the rape and murder of another.Fabio Montale is a cool, noir protagonist. Attractive and tough, like the classic P.I., his maverick, not by the book approach feels convincing in the Marseille setting. Izzo explores his character in detail, and he's got a lot to say. Nice to get back to some Mediterranean noir. The descriptions of Marseille were incredible and just captured the city as I remembered it in the mid 70s right down to the smells and the feel you got walking in certain areas of the city. I also loved having a hero who not only reflected on the city, but also on poetry, literature, and jazz.
