One of the best books I have ever read

My earnest admiration to the talent of David Gemmell. There is more action, magic, adventure, intrigue, drama and overall fantasy in 300 pages than in the 1600 pages of some modern trilogies. Of course, there's a moment, many actually, when I really didn't want it to be told that short. I'm thinking then "Fill the story to prepare me when the clash, or that meeting, or this endpoint of the travel, or whatever that builds up is about to come!" But no, he's obviously having something else up in



Gemmell is a master of heroic fantasy. However, he is always aware that heroes are made, not born. This is best exemplified by this book. Jarek Mace (a thief, a womanizer and all round selfish character) one day, for laughs, pretends to be a hero. But a legend is created and this book delightfully relates what happens to Jarek thereafter.

Despite this book being mildly cliché, I enjoyed it nonetheless. David Gemmell creates an expansive yet self-contained world that is basically an amalgam of Arthurian Avalon, late 13th century England and the late Angevin Empire where Robin Hood is set, along with entirely new elements that help to create an intriguing world.
